Acting White: Acting Absolutely Idiotisk

In the what must they be thinking category. The Swedish vodka maker Absolut must figure on adding more Mexican customers in place of all the Americans they will lose over this ad. The US, a colonial result of England and France, fights Mexico, a colony of Spain, and wins. Mexico signs away the spoils, including California. It was not about the Mayans, the Incas, or Navajo, just Euro-dominance in the new world. That’s the way it was, end of story. I thought the Vasa was the dumbest thing I ever heard a Swede do.

Maybe I'm missing something...this is offensive how, exactly?

It's like Coca-Cola making an ad for people in the Southern US, using a pre-civil war map of the US, with a confederate flag.

I just heard that the French now own Absolut - now it all makes sense. Nevermind.

In today's Wall St Journal, Absolut apologized: "In no way was it meant to offend or disparage, nor does it advocate an altering of borders, nor does it lend support to any anti-American sentiment, nor does it reflect immigration issues." The ad was designed for a Mexican audience and intended to recall "a time which the population of Mexico might feel was more ideal."

A boycott had been called for. Speaking as a Texan, I found this to be quite offensive.

unfortunately, this my dear, is how europeans think. they've somehow managed to manipulate historical facts and shift cultural landscapes in ways that place them well above the fray, distancing themselves from all the '-isms' that have us screwed now. i've met frenchies who think they still have colonies in the caribbean. and we're the delusional ones.
