Jack LaLanne: 1914-2011

I never met Mr. LaLanne, but I am a Board member of the Berkeley YMCA where he was a long-time member and supporter (emeritus). I certainly watched him on television, as a kid, and always marveled at his 'feats of fitness'. Our society owes him a huge debt of gratitude for helping to lead the way to the importance of a fit and healthy body.

All that exercise killed him.

FB, rather it kept him in high-quality living that you will definitely never see, if your picture and name accurately represent you. Catch some JLShow re-runs, it might help. I'll take his 96 any day.

As a young girl I started exercising with his shows. I remember he had a dog he would bring on sometimes. He just seemed so earnest and truthful. He convinced me of the necessity of exercise. A habit I've kept all my life. His motto: "If you don't use it, you lose it"

Rest in Peace Jack La Lanne.

If you want a laugh, watch the Addams Family episode where he teaches Uncle Fester to exercise. It is available on Hulu.com.

He has show clips on youtube- they are fun to watch. Sometimes the dog doesn't follow directions, and it was live TV so Jack had to play along.

James. I'd be interested to hear your take on the Ohio mother who was jailed and stripped of the right to pursue a career in education for lying to get her kids into better schools.
Obviously the deeper issue is the state of our schools, but what of her and the current situation?
Thoughts???

Thanks Sean! Went and watched the clips on YouTube, brought back so many good memories. He was truly ahead of his time. Told it like it is. They should rerun his shows. They are more relevant today than ever!

Anon 4:45, On the surface Mom and girls look like a victims, but closer scrutiny shows intent to 'game' the system for her gain and convenience, even after she was identified. I certainly understand parental concerns and the unfairness of property tax-driven schools, but she seemed recalcitrant to the rules, thereby earning her time.
