Helen Thomas: Anti-Israel is Not Always Anti-Semite

Helen Thomas' departure from the White House press corp. may be well over due, but I hope there will be some debate over whether her ill-advised remarks (here) were anti-Semitic or more narrowly, and less horrifically, anti-Israel. As a journalist, she should have kept her personal beliefs to herself, but as the nearly 90 year old daughter of Lebanese immigrants, we should also understand her background and the influence of old age. Beneath that crotchety, cantankerous surface is an elderly brain off its rails to a destination only the luckiest of us live long enough to see.

Of course her comments were not Anti-semitic, Israelis are imperial colonists in Palestine, so telling them to 'go back to Germany, Poland and America' is a perfectly reasonable thing to say, even if it is an impractical solution. When Ghandi told the British Raj to leave India he was not being racist against white people but expressing a frustration at being dominated and oppressed in his own land.

I feel this is an appropriate comparison because Palestine is oppressed in the same way that India was oppressed. In the same way that South Africa, Algeria, Vietnam, and every other colonised country were oppressed. Their struggles for liberation were fought against an Imperial colonist, not a religious or ethnic group, the only reason that the struggle against Israel is considered racially/religiously motivated is because the Zionist movement has been successful in 2 major acts of propaganda:

1. That Israel represents all Jews everywhere
2. Therefore, any criticism of Israel is a criticism of all Jews

Zionists everywhere will cling to these obviously faecetious arguments because without the veneer of the 'clash of civilizations' narrative it is clear that Israel is no different from the British Empire or the French Empire or the American Empire.

What exactly is it that she said that was untrue and "offensive"?? Is Israel not colony of White settlers from EUROPE in a brown region?

Hmmm. I don't know anything about this issue. A responsible blogger would have given a back story *wink*.

Like this Ms. Negro? Thank you for having the courage to admit not knowing the background. I did not either so did a bit of research.

Just goes to show, gods are terrible real estate agents (maybe just yahweh and allah). I don't hold it against Helen Thomas, sometimes I even completely agree with what she said about it. I hope she was glad to leave, it doesn't seem to be very honest work anymore.

Israel is totally different because a colony implies "client state" there is no motherland deriving massive profits from Israel. Besides all that, Israeli Jews include more than 1 million Jews from Middle Eastern Lands spanning from North Africa to Afghanistan. These populations have become mainstreamed in the sense that more than 1/2 of Israeli Jews are of Middle Eastern Heritage. They're rooted, unlike Brits in India: They're locals.
