"At Rep. Paul Broun’s town hall meeting on Tuesday, the Athens congressman asked who had driven the farthest to be there and let the winner ask the first question.
We couldn’t hear the question in the back of the packed Oglethorpe County Commission chamber, but whatever it was, it got a big laugh. According to an outraged commenter on the article, the question was, when is someone going to shoot Obama?"
"Broun's press secretary, Jessica Morris, confirmed that the question was indeed, who is going to shoot Obama? "Obviously, the question was inappropriate, so Congressman Broun moved on," she said."
Broun's response, "The thing is, I know there’s a lot of frustration with this president. We’re going to have an election next year. Hopefully, we’ll elect somebody that’s going to be a conservative, limited-government president that will take a smaller, who will sign a bill to repeal and replace Obamacare."
"Threatening the President of the United States is a class D felony under United States Code Title 18, Section 871. It consists of knowingly and willfully mailing or otherwise making "any threat to take the life of, to kidnap, or to inflict bodily harm upon the President of the United States".
My reaction. With this type of public urging and tacit support by our so-called leaders, it is only a matter of time before some nut-job tries to kill the president, and our weakening grasp on democracy. It is reasonable to disagree with the president, but it is patently un-democratic, un-patriotic, and un-American (not to mention illegal) to entertain ANY notion of his assassination. When such displays become acceptable, as they seem to be, that crazy guy wearing that 'the end is near placard' is not seeming so crazy after all.

What do you expect after all the comments and threats toward G. Bush with most on the lib side acting as if it were all in fun. After nearly eight years of that with hardly a peep about it I guess it would seem acceptable to those that took it to now think they can give a little back.
ReplyDeleteBut "now" it's bad form?
hmmm
Anon 9:40, I believe it is 'bad form' and illegal to threaten ANY president, or other elected official. The degree to which it is encouraged or tolerated should not follow partisanship. You have not seen this behavior on this blog, ever, and I cannot accept your tit-for-tat excuse (or that of any other commenter). Protection and enforcement should be absolute. I felt equally bad for the attempt on Ron Reagan, as I did for the assassinations of JFK, and Bobby Kennedy.
ReplyDeleteMr. Collier I apologize for not being clear. I didn't mean you personally and I agree with you about all sides. What I find bad form is how the majority of the left didn't call foul when Bush was threatened but do vehemently with Obama.
ReplyDeleteI imagine after the eight years Bush put up with it it seems "OK" to those that might say such things about Obama. It doesn't make it right in any way but makes it at least in some small way understandable.
Hope that helps with my lack of clarity.

ReplyDeleteThat being said...why isnt most of FOX News commentators not in jail!
For the same reason all the ultralibs from MSNBC aren't in jail for Giving the ex-prez so much hell.
ReplyDeleteRegardless whoever does it, it IS bad form.
@Anon 3:51
ReplyDeleteYou guys are tiring in your constant tic for tac rhetoric…I cannot recall of any of the liberal media calling for the assassination of BUSH openly, even with the open anti-war protest movement!
These threats against President Obama are unprecedented, the obvious being the he is first elected African American to the White House!
And I said nothing about liberal media calling for an assassination of anyone did I?
ReplyDeleteI said, "Giving the ex-prez so much hell."
Read please.....
No conservative media has called for anyone's assassination either so the point is non-existent.
As far as this article it was some citizen making the comment. It was not Broun so why so much is being made of it I do not know. No one condoned it in anyway.
So what is your take and Wisconsin democrat representative Gordon Hintz telling his republican counterpart Michelle Litjens "You are F'n dead" straight to her face?
That wasn't some nobody asking a joke question.
This happened this week. Plenty in the news on it if you don't believe me.
So a lot of bad things get said by idiots but you pick and choose which are "offensive" because, it's Obama and oh yeah, he's black and so are you. Well duh.....
At least you do submit the liberal media may have joked about Bush and his demise behind closed doors.
I wonder how many times you yourself joked about it.
Anon 7:39/3:51, Professor Collier request civility and no name calling, so I’m going to humor you in your delusion, http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/barackobama/5967942/Barack-Obama-faces-30-death-threats-a-day-stretching-US-Secret-Service.html...
ReplyDeleteThe GOP and the conservative movement encourages this type of violence, outside of the leftist movements of the 60-70s, there has not been any type of counter balance of extremism experienced during democratic administrations… Waco shootout, Oklahoma City Bombing, recent assassination attempt on Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords life, these vitriolic behavior is encourage and fan by negative talk radio, rallies from the right…IF the Tavis Smiley’s, Keith Olbermans, encouraged such behavior while Bush was in office the FCC would have shut there respective programs down, and even if a civilian makes a irresponsible statement , it’s the public official job to public object to the comment,
"Who is going to shoot Obama?" an unidentified person in the audience asked Broun. The question elicited a "big laugh," according to the Athens Banner-Herald.
Rather than confront the question head-on, Broun responded by changing the subject to health care: "The thing is, I know there's a lot of frustration with this president. We're going to have an election next year. Hopefully, we'll elect somebody that's going to be a conservative, limited-government president that will take a smaller, who will sign a bill to repeal and replace Obamacare." passive endorsement!
If I made such a statement at Maxine Waters rally, she undoubtly would have me removed!
Collier is correct that this is a nonpartisan issue...it is unpatrotic and unacceptable!
Thanks for not commenting on the issue I mentioned in Wisconsin.
ReplyDeleteIt's obvious you refuse to believe the same kind of hateful rhetoric happens from the left directed towards the right.
We have nothing left to discuss.
