Don't they have the "right to refuse" anybody?
I am no lawyer, but I think the 'right to refuse' is a toothless holdover from pre 1964 civil rights days. Proprietors who discriminate can loose their business license and be sued for damages. I think this falls under public accommodation rules. Any barristers want to chime in here?
I heard tonight OJ's lawyers are going after the liquor lic. on grounds the action was racially motivated.
Mark: As much as I might agree with the thrust of your sentiment, your comment violates my name-calling rule, so I cannot publish it. I would welcome a re-comment.
I hate to sound so cynical, but wherever OJ goes...well...that only seems natural. Anyway....I got the gut reaction that the owner was throwing OJ out for the publicity it would bring to his restaurant. Then he says that OJ acted so polite and with taste that he almost shook his hand....but he didn't go there??? That sounded bizarre to me. I think it's great he threw the killer out....and make no mistake about it.....OJ is a muderer. Why aren't more restuarants and golf courses throwing this weasle out more often? I cannot believe that OJ could get very far suing places that would do that. "But Judge," one could say, "He was found to be responsible to the deaths of two people!! I feared for the life of my patrons and workers! What if OJ were to lose his temper at the restaurant? With all the cutlery on the tables I could not be certain he would not slice someone elses throat!! I kicked him out for saftey concerns!!"
ok... with a show of hands: who thinks OJ did it?!? hmmm, everyone!
with that out of the way, he was still found not guilty! there are plenty OJ's down south in Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia running around who were found "not guilty" for killing, shooting, hanging, maiming, and causing general havoc to thousands of nameless and faceless Black folk... but i digress.
this restaurant owner comes off as a publicity hound, who took exception to one patron going "giggly" about seeing the Infamous OJ Simpson... big deal! a business owner cannot go around deciding who they want to or do not want to serve in their restaurants without just cause: he was not disorderly, he was not drunk, he was just being OJ (and this is still not a crime). there are laws against that (go back and read about the laws concerning interstate commerce).
live and let live! HA HA HA...that's funny when talking about OJ, huh?!?
Okay these cartoons are getting lame....
Yep, among black folks and white people w/sense the consensus is that yes, OJ is a m-f but unless he's disrupting the business or a threat to the patrons' health, safety, etc. then if you toss him out expect to be sued or get a visit from the local human rights commission. Now, that said...it is OJ ;-)
James I do not remember any name I called Oj but if I violated your name calling rule I apologize.Anyway I would have kicked him out of my resturaunt as well.
OJ has no love for the black community. I have no love for him.
Also James thier is a Forum bieng created for black people to share ideas on changing things. Please check it out and then register we need enlightened folks like you. http://afrospear.jconserv.net/index.php

downbrown: thanks. I long for the days of simple, civilized put downs.
Geesh, I tried not to comment but I allowed myself to be baited, so I bit.
Jack Ruby has a restaurant in our downtown Cincinnati.
In 2001 when we had an uprising & revolt, which was reported on World News etc. that it was a riot, but it was a definite 'We will no longer tolerate our Black Men being shot dead in our streets for unjust causes.
Anyway, Jack Ruby decided to pay us back one year by closing his restaurant doors for one week, as one of the biggest African American summer celebration & concerts, took place.
Why? He didn't want any Black Folks patroning his establishment. The fallout from this the Jazz Festival and other events came to a dead halt.
Whoopi Goldberg, Bill Cosby & other African American Headliners refused to step one foot in Cincinnati. We had people of all colors from around the world standing side by side with us on this. Many artists cancelled & helped us boycott downtown Cincy. The end result, loss of millions to the City and many white business owners were never able to recoup from this.
As for Jack Ruby, we would rather dig in the dirt and fry up some worms than to patron his restaurant.
