Acting White: Disney's Black Princess Kisses White Frog

In the fall of 2009 Disney will finally release the long-awaited Frog Princess, renamed to The Princess and the Frog, featuring their first-ever full-fledged black princess. The upcoming makeover of the previously announced animation also includes a renaming of the Princess from Maddy to Tiana, the elimination of her past as a chambermaid to a white socialite, and the addition of Oprah Winfrey as the voice of Tiana’s mother.

All the controversy, however, has not been handled. It seems that the Prince himself is a white-looking guy, with the hint of Spanish in his accent. What? No black prince? What’s up with this?

You can bet there’s going to be a whole lot of yammering from all sides as we near the release date. Black folks will be crying that Disney does not think black-on-black love is marketable to little white girls, or their parents. On the other hand, some white folks will be saying that Disney is trying to push interracial ideas into the head of little white girls (and boys), as part of some PC conspiracy for them to feel bad about their whiteness. I’m leaning towards yammer no. 1, since Disney has historically come down on the side of marginalizing blacks.

On a slightly darker vector, it may be interesting to consider that little white girls associating with Tiana, in Disney’s view, might not swallow the Princess or themselves swooning over a handsome black prince. Or perhaps Disney does not want the future mothers of dwindling white America being imprinted so early in their lives with the notion of a black suitor. Disney may not want to take the blame for an up-tick in interracial marriages in about 15 or 20 years.

These are just a few thoughts on the upcoming debate, sure to get testy. And for the empirical record, my daughter loved Pocahontas, as a 5 year old, and has had an equal amount of black and white boy-crushes over the ensuing years – and I blame it all on Disney. My 13 year old son still falls into Harry Potter-speak, and this is Disney’s fault too, although they had nothing to do with the movie. Disney makes an easy target, as they have been manipulating kids, and parental coffers, from the get-go.

John Hope Franklin: 1915-2009

“We know all too little about the factors that affect the attitudes of the peoples of the world toward one another. It is clear, however, that color and race are at once the most important and the most enigmatic.”

John Hope Franklin

Morning Edition, March 27, 2009 · Historian John Hope Franklin, who died this week at 94, both chronicled and lived through racism in America. One of those firsthand experiences with racism came when he was a 12-year-old boy in Tulsa, Okla., in the 1920s.

"It was my first year as a Boy Scout, and I'm very, very excited about fulfilling all of the obligations of the Boy Scouts, and I've got so much enthusiasm and so much anxiety to be the best Boy Scout I can possibly be," he told his son, John W. Franklin, last year.

"One of the admonitions that we had was that we had to do a good deed every day," he said. So, while standing at a street corner in downtown Tulsa, Franklin was eyeing an opportunity to help while waiting for the light to turn, he recalled.

"And I saw this woman as she was stepping off the curb — and she had a cane — and I thought, 'Oh my goodness, she can't see,' " Franklin said. "And so I walked up to her and I said 'Could I help you cross?' She said, 'Oh, yes, I'm so glad.' And she grabbed on my arm as though I was the last person on earth."

"We got about halfway across the street — and she's so happy and laughing and talking — she said, 'Are you white or black?' And I told her I was colored, and she said, 'Get your filthy hands off of me,' and I got my hands off of her," Franklin said.

Franklin said that he had reflected on that moment: "That this woman, who could not see and who was in desperate need of help, was not as interested in help as she was in being certain that a young black man didn't touch her. And that if she couldn't see, she certainly couldn't know whether my hands were clean or dirty. And I knew then that we were in deep trouble to overcome that kind of racial hostility."

Acting White: Poor Law Enforcement?

"DALLAS (AP)—A police officer was placed on administrative leave Thursday over a traffic stop involving an NFL player whom he kept in a hospital parking lot and threatened to arrest while his mother-in-law died inside the building...

Dallas Police Chief David Kunkle apologized to the family and announced that Powell would be on paid leave pending an internal investigation...

“When we at the command staff reviewed the tape, we were embarrassed, disappointed,” Kunkle said. “It’s hard to find the right word and still be professional in my role as the police chief. But the behavior was not appropriate...”

“His behavior, in my opinion, did not exhibit the common sense, the discretion, the compassion that we expect our officers to exhibit,” Kunkle said...""

Is this poor law enforcement or just bad luck?

Acting White: Oakland Cop Killer

By now everyone has surely heard of the five shootings of Oakland Police officers over the weekend, resulting in four deaths, plus that of the parolee turned murderer. As a resident of Oakland, I was horrified when a BART Officer recently killed an unarmed man in custody. Today, I am equally horrified, times four, that these officers are gone by the actions of a vile being. But what I really want to talk about is what you will likely not see in the papers or news about this tragedy.

The first thing you will not see addressed, but perhaps pieced together in pictures, is that the four officers killed appeared to be white and their killer, particularly, was black, although this is what every honest reader wanted to know from the start. Why do we want to know, you ask? That’s easy. Ethnicity does not speak to guilt or innocence, but it is a very valid empirical story as to who, what and where notorious danger lurks.

The second thing you will not see written is why these police officers were so, umm, white. Oakland, with a sizable black population of 35% (white (23%), Latino (21%), and Asian (15%)) should have had at least one black person on the law’s side in this battle, but no. The reality is that both motorcycle or SWAT duty are coveted exam-positions where white males perform at a higher level and this is how this lone demographic found itself owning the wrong place at the wrong time slot.

The third thing you will not see written is that when police officers get injured or killed, the follow-on police work is often compromised to the detriment of the health and safety of the public and the officers themselves. While this is understandable, from an emotional standpoint, it is also an unacceptable profile for an officer, that they should take risks that increase the likelihood of injury to themselves or innocents. The SWAT officers clearly did not assume and prepare for the worst case scenario, causing me to wonder if emotions from their slain and gravely injured brother officers unduly influenced them.

The fourth, but hardly the last, thing you will not read about is the effect this tragedy will have on white officers and their relationship, good and bad, with black Oakland, and officers on the whole, engaging black suspects in the future. They can’t help but take a more aggressive and/or cautious posture toward them. Profiling will go up. Brutality will go up. Arrest will go up. Injuries will go up. Fatalities will go up. Lawsuits will certainly go up, and convictions will likely go down.

I don’t have a lot of answers, but I can tell you that until we stop hoping that we all just ‘get along’ and start speaking about things unspeakable, we are not going to make a lot of progress and people will continue to die senselessly, needlessly and tragically.

Acting White: Talking Like A White Girl

For the twelve years my daughter has been in school, black girls have accused her of talking like a white girl. I take full responsibility for her plight, because during the same time her mother and I have insisted that she speak our language properly. Just two days ago my 85 year old mother reminded me that our house was the same, and how the First Lady’s recent admission, of her own childhood label of ‘talking like a white girl’, had touched her aging heart.

Many years ago, while living in Boston, Michele Obama’s point of importance was made clear by Caribbean immigrant black women armed with no formal skills, other than a command of English, who were able gain job opportunities in child care not available to equally qualified black-English speaking women. Simply put, responsible employers and parents of any color know that the first cut to be made toward a bright future is the ability to communicate well, and this training begins early.

Now both my kids know street-slang too, as did I, and this is okay as long as they use it appropriately. I call this cultural bilingualism. They need to be comfortable with different people. But let’s not be confused that the informal has any rightful claim on the formal. In 1996, the Oakland Unified School District wanted to make black-English, Ebonics, an acceptable standard of communication, but thankfully this nonsense was scuttled from the left, the right, and everywhere in between. Bad idea.

So I commend the First Lady on stepping up on this issue of language. Like it or not, women have always been (and always will be) at the centerpiece of our behaviors and especially those of the men who seek their attention. While she is at it, Michele could definitely push black women on taking better care of their physical selves as well, rather than attempting to recalibrate healthiness and attractiveness across a 50% obesity rate, black men and boys included. Also, I can't wait until Mrs. Obama starts clueing women in on attracting, focusing, and guiding men to heights.

Acting White: Pope Claims Condoms Increase AIDS

Pope Benedict wants more Catholics, I get this. Africa is a growth region with a lot of uncommitted delegates (souls), so no surprise that he would be there making sure the Muslims, Hindus, and Mormons do not run off with the place. After all, the church has expenses too. Right here in Oakland, with a brand-spanking new cathedral ‘of the light’ that cost $200 million, we are faced with a restless bunch of diocesans in the dark trying to pay their bills.

I may not agree, but, all things being equal, I understand why the pontiff does not like condoms. Any shortage of little baby Catholics grows into an eventual shortage of grown-up worshipers with jobs to match tithing obligations. It all comes back to managing expense to the promise land – God loves accountants.

Of course what I do not understand is how the pontiff can challenge the truth that condoms prevent the spread of AIDS, especially to people who have yet to buy into his abstinence line. This is like giving away hymnals before people actually show up to your church to sing. And if they try some early off-key practice singing at home, then they die. Oops. My bad. I meant to say keep the books, but hold off on the singing until Sunday, when you get the full story.

It seems that in order to maximize the number of long-term Catholics, the Holy See would want the future faithful to immediately switch to safe sex, saving the missionary playbook on how to 'play', as catholicized monogamous couples, for when they are firmly in the church’s dogmatic clutches. I’m sure the Lord Almighty can distinguish between condom use to prevent the epidemic spread of a deadly disease, and 'jimmy-hat' haberdashery that limits the number new babies by faithful hetero-couples. So I ask, how come the Pope cannot make this distinction, in order to help save these poor Africans he so fervently desires for his flock?

Acting White: Madoff Winning

I disturbed the feathers of a few friends yesterday when I declared that the Madoff guilty plea was little or no consolation to his crime. What knotted their knickers was my contention that authorities were speeding things along to ‘get it over and done with’. The crime-of-the-century nature opens up cauldrons of anti-Semitism that many would rather leave undisturbed.

My evidence of the ‘bum’s rush’ of the case stems from the authorities allowing Bernie to plead guilty as if he acted alone, when everyone believes that this could not have been the case. Sure, he had help licking the envelopes containing the bogus monthly statements to his victims, but I contend he also had the help of his family and other cohorts at the top, including his dear wife shuffling millions around in obvious show for the authorities.

I contend that Bernie’s prosecution should have been integrated into the obvious cohort, delayed if necessary, and the whole Madoff crew should be looking at enough time to have them rolling over on each other faster than you can say ‘putz’. Instead, we get this pseudo-closure of Madoff heading alone to a jail cell he knew was coming all along, and for which he has had years to prepare. The culmination of his crime was how to keep as many of his team out of jail and well-funded long after the authorities have declared victory over his carcass.

Well, I’m not buying it. While I loathe the historical anti-Semitic replay this crime beckons, I cannot sanction letting this very evil individual take a pass because there are anti-Semites among us waiting to pounce on what they would consider as evidence backing their 1,000 year old hatred. Bernie used affinity to scam his people, and now the authorities are using it in the clean-up. When our laws become vehicles of PC expedience around painful chapters, we all lose and lose big. Madoff targeting Jews is no different than Ponzi himself going after Italians. Yes, Bernie should go to jail, but he expected it and planned for it. His real punishment can only be that the people who helped him steal all that money should be behind bars as well.

Acting White: No More Tigers

Tiger Woods is back playing golf for now, and those who love him better enjoy it while it last. Those long drives have taken their toll on the knees and we are witnessing the beginning of the end of one of the greatest golfers that ever played the game. But the question of the day is why I believe no black golfer will likely ever replace the spot he’s owned at the top, and why so few will even make the cut to try.

To illustrate this I reach back to a lesser-known Russian sprinter from the Ukraine, Valeri Borzov (featured). Borzov was one lighting-fast white man who briefly held the gold-spot in the sprints at the time of the 1972 Olympics, and long after blacks had come to dominate the fast-twitch muscle-fiber events. But Borzov loved soccer and was a diligent student as well, so his track and field glory faded quickly, mostly by his lack of focus.

As Borzov was a sprinter who happened to be white, Tiger is a golfer who happens to be a physical and cultural admixture, largely black. We made him a hopeful breakthrough of future black professional golfers, but this has not happened, and makes no more sense than Russians expecting that Borzov was the beginning of more than a smidgen of Russian presence in the 100 and 200 meter sprints.

Golf is a game steeped in European culture, just as running and sprinting is steeped in primordial African and African-American culture. Earl Woods was a golf-maniac who got lucky in having a gifted son. Little else mattered than little Tiger with a club in his hand. But be clear that the elder and junior Woods were driven partly by the No Negros Allowed experience, just as the Politburo reveled in a fast Ukrainian crashing the podium gatherings of black Americans, something Hitler promised in 1942, but failed to do.

The up-shot is that we get all excited about first, Obama coming to mind, but the truth is that somewhere on the planet there will always exist persons of any ethnic background and possessing the gifts to unlock any door humanity can present. This is inclusive of different cultures advancing at different rates and to different heights, with disparities that coax out the best and worse. It is also why experiencing other cultures is so vital to progress, compared to living in a shell.

“Only an idiot would ever measure the heights of lovers by their physiques.”

Acting White: Intelligence Matters

Everyday people act stupid. In fact, they seem to be getting dumber with each new You Tube. Black people compete too well in this category. I recall seeing a black woman, just the other day, attempt to justify breastfeeding her infant child and talking on a cell phone, while driving an air-bag-equipped mini-van. She had the audacity to say (on camera) that she would do it again, despite what the police confirmed. This brings up how intelligence is not just a begrudging distinction, by those who failed physical education (PE) in grade school.

Intelligence matters because disparities in intelligence matter. Disparities matter because they settle, on average, the competition for scarce resources, while establishing who will have or have not, enjoy or suffer, or even live or die. Measures of intelligence like IQ, however imperfect, matter because we need relative short-cuts for identifying who’s got it and who does not. More is better and less is not.

So now, who cares? What’s the big deal anyway? Well, we all should care. Blacks definitely should care. Backing up, when whites long-ago said that blacks were inferior and could not cogitate to their level, blacks took it upon themselves to prove them wrong. Blacks begged, borrowed, and stole education as a way to disprove the empirical inferiority exampled by whites. The more whites argued black inferiority with charts and graphs, the greater the commitment of blacks to prove them wrong. Not a bad strategy for focusing black energies onto the win-win of education, and the benefits of the rule-of-law beneath it.

Now fast-forward to today where we see every excuse under the sun why 50% of black kids fail to pass an eighth-grade reading test, derailing their chance to gain a high school diploma. Minus a diploma, they will undoubtedly live an inferior life dictated by an inferior intelligence, exampled by unapologetic women breastfeeding their precious infants, while 200 mph bags threaten to blast said infants into lifeless oblivion. And whereupon sadly, a white lawyer will sue the automaker, the cell phone maker, the airbag maker, and the unused child-seat manufacturer, for millions on behalf of the ‘poor’ disadvantaged family.

Intelligence matters.

Acting White: Cops Gone Wild

Another police officer flushes his career in one long moment of violent stupidity. In this case, it was King County (Seattle) Deputy Paul Schene. It seems that a 15 year old girl kicked off her shoe toward the officer, as Schene was placing her in a holding cell for auto theft. Schene responded with a barrage of punches, a head slam to the wall, body slam to the floor, along with a few more punches to the victim's head, while she lay face down subdued by Schene and another officer. The whole thing was captured on video cameras in the hallway and the cell. No doubt Schene's defense will characterize the girl's shoe-flip as life threatening, but the video tells the story of a grown man/public servant beating the hell out an ill-mannered youth - nothing more. The girl will likely collect millions from the County, while the deputy collects a sh*t-canned life, via a felony conviction with well-deserved prison time. Gotta love those cameras.

Acting White: Jindal Flops

After his performance the other night, no one in their right-mind would ever think that LA Governor Bobby Jindal could get elected as dog-catcher of the United States, let alone as president. The Republican rebuttal he gave to Obama’s speech to Congress was dead-on-arrival, in just about every way. No heart, no soul, no logic. Zip do-da.

Jindal is clearly a smart guy, but just as is the case with Obama, smartness only qualifies you to teach in the university, not to be president. Leadership requires that people want to follow you, not run to the kitchen for a re-fill while you drone on. Jindal clearly showed that he is missing that special something-something that erupts when the director yells ‘and we are live’, with America on the edge of their seats.

The only person that seemed to like Jindal was Rush Limbaugh, and everyone knows that what Rush likes mostly is himself, pharma and money, in whatever order he can obtain them. He clearly sees these items in support of Jindal, but will quickly switch his tune when he can save face in some twisted-logic kind of way.

I am still a supporter of the two-party system, but the Republicans are not holding up their end. Their only political hand is to be supportive of Obama and hope that the public loses confidence, before the patients (we the people) expire. Critical progress requires that Republicans be more competitive, and that’s just not going to happen – as they, be they elephants or donkeys, are cut from the same bolt of cloth. So in the end the GOP needs to shut-up and let Obama and the Dems make their run at turning around the Bush debacle, until and unless the situation and people demand another change.

Acting White: USAG Holder Calls Americans Cowards On Race

It has always been my understanding that when you call someone a coward, you are picking a fight. After all, a coward is someone lacking spine or backbone to a non-redeemable level. Once I label someone as such, I never, ever, trust them to step up. The label signifies a permanent character flaw. So the question becomes just what Mr. Holder was thinking, in his new role as Obama’s top lawman, when he called Americans cowards?

Who exactly was Holder calling a coward? His words, spoken in a speech for Black History Month, would seem to be aimed at whites. If so, how does this lowest of lowly labels spark a constructive engagement around issues of race, between the races? Answer, it does not. In fact it does just the opposite, pushing recipients further into their closets, where whispering is the only sound you hear.

Now if what Mr. Holder really meant to say is that Americans are fearful to discuss the subject of race across boundaries, he would be correct. In contrast, I submit that ignorance drives fear, rather than cowardice. But even more to the point, Mr. Holder confuses not being a hero with being a coward, and this logic is simply wrong.

There will always be courageous people who take difficult moral positions that include tremendous sacrifice for themselves and their loved ones, and for these heroic people we all should be grateful. There will also be those who pile upon their fears with selfishness and loathing, to the point of earning the label of coward, and they belong with the despised. However, there is the great middle of the people who, with good leadership and guidance, can be coaxed to do the right thing. These people are neither heroes nor cowards, but are the evolutionary status quo inching its way to progress – the yearning masses.

In his short-sightedness, Eric Holder attacked people not behavior - a mistake - and he painted his pejorative with a very wide brush. His message was opposite of that which won the election. I can imagine Obama saying to his attorney general, quietly, that he best leave the words of inspiration to those better suited, while he sticks to upholding the rule of law.

Acting White: NYPost Chimp Cartoon

While I consistently challenge people to show responsibility for their plight, regardless of the behavior of others, this does not mean that such behavior should go unrecognized. Whether the NYPost takes a hit over this ad and backs down will tell us a lot about where America really stands in its thinking – and this ultimately is a good thing. Truth is always better than fiction.

The fact that the paper could choose to run such a cartoon with blatant racial and violent tones applied to the president establishes credence to this particular perspective of the country. The only question is how many people are laughing in agreement, versus shaking their heads in disgust. Understandably, the responses are tempered by the dire economic straits we find ourselves. But how much tempering should there be?

Relative to the former president (with any due respect) Obama is far from primate land, other than the racist association some might make of his African ancestry. Is the Post attempting to establish an acceptable benchmark for characterizing and challenging the White House? Are they attempting to see how ‘thick’ his skin is? In light of recent partisan splits, stirring blood in the water sooner rather than later will sell newspapers, perhaps? Who knows what they were thinking.

In any event, I expect the White House to remain cool. The next four years is a long race, and they’re just out of the gate. Obama will be called many names and characterized unflatteringly by people, like Limbaugh, who seek their own profit in the president’s and the country’s greater failure. There is nothing to do about these unpatriotic parasites, but to ignore them. Personally, I have been ignoring Murdoch and his rags for many years.

Acting White: President Obama Angers Black Press

President Obama accomplished many things at his first press conference last week, including rubbing some of his home-folks the wrong way. Of note, he invited representatives of both the black and Puerto Rican-press to sit up front and knock elbows with 50 year correspondent Helen Thomas, the Associated Press (AP), and Reuters. However, getting a prime seat and getting on the questions list are not the same.

After being frozen out of the questions, Hazel Edney, a black reporter from the Black Press of America exclaimed, “we were window dressing”. Another anonymous black-press reporter said of Obama, “he ought to be ashamed.” Normally, minority press representative can be found in cheap seats, or standing in the entryway, so the angst is somewhat understandable, but not really.

Here we have a president wading into the alligator-infested waters of the country’s problems, and the last thing he needed was a ‘black’ question. What are you going to do about blacks with this, that, or the other problem? I understand the focus, but the probability of these types of questions assumes Obama’s perspective and solutions are white-only, and represent the old-school. He is everybody’s president and we should take his word until proven otherwise. As they feel each other out, it is up to the black-press to convince Obama that they are not out to embarrass him or grandstand at his expense.

The first thing they can do is drop the chips on their shoulders that cause them to feel slighted if they are not treated above non-black organizations. The comment by Ms. Edney ignores that there will be more briefings where, with her current admonishment of the president, she is now likely to be standing back in the entryway. No Obama press staffer wants to be the one who gave clearance to a person who embarrassed the boss.

Rather than seeing the seating as a positive gesture and encouragement to move beyond the confines of speaking only for the black community, these journalists returned to the status quo of taking shots at the president. What they ignore is that as long as his solutions encompass the widest swath of the citizenry, the public does not care about the nuance of his operation. The professional press, on the other hand, should care very much that he is juggling more inclusive access. The comments of the black-press are exactly the reason why caution is warranted. Their shirtsleeve-emotional responses show a lack of professionalism toward cultivating this important invite. In-your-face confrontation and insults are not the way to win a front-row seat or spot on the next question list. Time to turn over a new professional leaf.

Acting White: The Real Charles Darwin

We are approaching the bicentennial of the birth of British naturalist, Charles Darwin, Thursday February 12, 2009. I have always found myself nearly alone as both black and an admirer of the man most commonly associated with the idea of ‘survival of the fittest’. I first learned of Darwin early in high school, from the Jesuits, and have never associated him with the racist labels too quickly attached in the crossfire of racial rhetoric.

Darwin dismissed the scientific arguments of more than one human species, a centerpiece to propositions of white superiority. To this day, and still consistent with his beliefs, science has yet to show more than rare mutative hints of physiological differences in our most recent version, homo sapiens sapiens. This is not to ignore the differing empirical deposits of humankind spread around the globe, but rather to say the drivers are not genetic difference, but rather genetic distribution. Our version of humankind simply has not been around long enough and/or isolated enough to genetically split off; compared to other species Darwin studied.

The most popular jabs taken at Darwin stem from the association of eugenics, a term coined by his half-cousin F.Galton in the year after his death in 1882. While Darwin acknowledged the existence of heredity, he was always clear on the folly of selective breeding in humans with the goal of a master race. He thought the idea of ‘hereditary improvement’ to be impractical, and that people would reject it. Genetic engineering ran counter to Darwin’s belief that sympathy was ‘the noblest part of our nature’ and incompatible with purposeful 'weeding'.

Darwin was strongly against slavery and the rank-ordering of humans into so-called races of sub-species. Nonetheless, others of his day, and long after his death, abused his ideas under the Darwinism brand, for exploiting people and circumstances for greedy purposes. He does not deserve this continued besmirching of his good name.

My own thanks go to the man whose work encouraged me to search for the connection between the distributions of intelligence we see around the world today, and how it came to be, beginning with our oldest known relative, an Ethiopian woman, mother to modern humankind, who lived and died 160,000 years ago in Africa.

The original Chuck D, a great man in my book.

Acting White: America's BIGgie Problem

Most of you know my pre-occupation with the plight of Black people, and you have undoubtedly heard my rant about how Obama is no savior, rather Blacks must save themselves (mostly from themselves). This post is about how ingrained that hurdle has become.

A few weeks ago I saw the movie trailer (embedded below) for NOTORIOUS, the movie about the life and times of the hugely popular gansta’ rapper Biggie Smalls. Biggie was killed in the fashion of gun violence personified in Gangsta'’ Rap. This is the only part of the music industry where success leads to probable death.

I asked a young co-worker, who generally keeps me current on popular culture, if she had seen the movie and she said she had. Her review was that it glorified his short career, and there was some controversy over whether Lil’ Kim, a popular female gangsta'’ rapper, got her full due as Biggie’s love interest, among the many.

Nowhere in her Siskel & Ebert, did my co-worker say that the message of the movie was to stay in school, work hard, and make something of yourself. Instead it was a tribute to a man who extolled violence and who died violently. The fact that he, as with many of these rappers, had cloaked talent only enhances the tragedy.

But what really gets me is the total lack of push back within the black community that a movie about Biggie should be about glorifying the way he lived and died, rather than stating it as its true tragedy, where a black boy/man of abilities chooses a path that extols the worse of black living and sacrifices his life in its twisted glory.

It is this complacency with misdirection that is ingrained in too many blacks. For every teacher, coach, or counselor, attempting to direct a kid to a bright future, two other kids are standing in a long theater line, nine dollars in-hand, to celebrate a light that went out in a hail of gunfire. Biggie is dead, but his big problem is alive and well.

Acting White: Michael Steele to Chair the RNC

I have no disparaging retorts for Republican and former Lt. Governor of Maryland, Michael Steele, as he takes over the lead of the Republican National Committee. There are those who would call Steele Uncle Tom-like and question his blackness, but not me. Opinions aside, his desire to lead is not, in itself, an indicator of selling out. The Committee’s antics, in this election, hurt John McCain more than helped. Steele may be just what they need, an excuse to behave like mature stewards of the GOP.

In part, I attribute Steele’s victory to the Obama Effect, the contagious belief, by voting majorities, that a black person can do more than simply bid his racial interest. I was tired of white leaders and voters pretending that they are the only people who can look after everybody’s well-being. Hogwash!

However, I will not be turning in my independent voter card to Republicans, just as I stayed sober with the Democrats, before and after Obama won. My vote goes to the person, not the party, that I believe has America’s best interest at heart. Obama’s win, and similar wins like Deval Patrick of Massachusetts, and even Steele’s RNC win, remind me that black interests and that of all Americans is not, nor can it be, separate or exclusive of each other. It is political race-cardsmanship to believe only Democrats or Republicans can represent a particular group.

Conservative blacks need a welcoming political home, a place that they can belong. Our 2+ political party system is stronger on all sides of the aisle because black conservatives will have a greater voice in their party. I have high hope that this participation will put a reversal to the divisive Republican antics that have ruled the party for too long. Many Republicans have looked the other way when people like Saltsman dis-invited badly needed non-white support, purely on the basis of skin color, rather than political ideology. Perhaps Obama’s win will provide the Republican faithful with the needed backbone to separate conservative and race politics.

Acting White: Old War Horses and Big Hats

I have a few more observations from President Obama’s inauguration. The first has to do with the oath of office comedy of errors. The second concerns the alleged Milli-Vanilli moment of Yitzhak Perlman-Yo-Yo Ma. The third addresses Aretha Franklin’s hat. The fourth is about the poem. Lastly, I consider Rev. Lowry’s (illustrated) invocating parting-shot.

It was only fitting that the Chief Justice and president-elect Obama would stumble on the hell-hath-frozen-over-my-dead-body handoff of the country’s fortunes to a black man. Just chalk it up to all the seismic activity of white folks rolling over in their graves at that moment, accompanied by the hand-clapping and whooping of the spirits of dead slaves et al.

As an occasional musician and childhood clarinet player, I wondered, through that entire quartet number, just how in heck those instruments were functioning in the cold. Unlike Milli or Vanilli, I knew each of the players to be consummate musicians, directed by John Williams, the maestro himself, so complainers need to get real.

The same goes for Ms. Aretha’s voice. Fortunately, her cords were somewhat protected from the cold. Regardless, that bow-dacious hat was absolutely needed to keep her warm, and it also had to compliment a face and voice that know no equal – a tall order. I say fine job to the Queen of Soul and her hat maker.

The poem. I had high hopes for my comprehension, but after a few words my bladder overruled my synaptic struggle. I hope others enjoyed it, but I mostly like that we had a knew face in the poetry mix, inspired, I’m sure, by Ms. Maya.

I cringed during the invocation when Lowery opened a big can of old civil-rights wounds. Obama’s pained smile said it all, but he also had to be thinking of his dear white grandmother complaining about scary black men, déjà vu again. Whenever I’m around really old folks, (and my kids think I’m old) I assume that their past will creep into the conversation. So I treat them like a favorite book that’s out of print, but all the more cherished for its hold on the past, and for helping us better live the present. One day the old folks will not be there to embarrass us, and we will be sad for our loss.
