I heard about this South African device during the FIFA World Cup, this past summer. Some people are quick to point out that the device does not actually prevent rape, rather it ‘shreds’ the penis of the attacker, creating a disincentive. Most of the articles I have read are simply reprints of the inventors’ press release, but the discussion (here) presents a better debate of the issues and context. It is important to note that rape and HIV infections in S. Africa are rampant, and the highest in the world.World-wide Rape Statistics per capita (here).

Surprisingly, neither your blog entry nor the item you linked to explicitly drew the connection between rape and HIV in South Africa. I don't know whether or not all your readers are aware of it, but evidently one reason for at least some of the many rapes in South Africa is the widespread belief there that sex with a virgin can cure HIV/AIDS. Hence, given the large number of people with HIV, a lot of rapes are committed against young girls for "medicinal purposes".

Something like this could come in handy here in the US except it could be a lot simpler.
National Birth Control, mandatory across the board, all females under 18 and those with inadequate income to care for a child.
Better yet for MALES, same criteria.
Then the " you are taking away my rights" people complain less even though the effect would be the same.
The positive short term benefits would be apparent in a year or less.
The long term benefits would be outstanding for everyone.
But who am I kiddin'.
It aint happenin' anytime soon if ever.........
I would love to spare young girls the burden of early motherhood. It seems to me that having time to grow up some, learn something and become self sustaining and have some young fun would be a good thing. So I really approve of birth control for girls and young women. Their lives could still be made miserable by being sexually abused at young ages even though they would not become mothers. Early mother hood even with its inherent joys can blight a young woman's entire life.
